Fundraising* undertaken by Harris Development Limited is enabling a number of historical projects to be taken forward as part of the Isle of Harris Landscape Partnership Scheme.

The Dìleab Ghàidhlig na Hearadh project will publish a Gaelic book on the history of Harris told through the personal experiences of Harris people, entitled ‘Beul Aithris na Hearadh’ and a music tuition book and CD on the Gaelic songs of Harris ‘Orain Ghaidhlig na Hearadh’.

The project will make good use of audio archives containing recordings of Harris people, including the tapes and transcriptions made by people working for the Comunn Eachdraidh in the 1980s and the audio archive held by the School of Scottish Studies in Edinburgh containing recordings made in the 1950s to the 1990s. A request has also been made for access to recordings made for BBC Radio nan Gaidheal, now being researched for the Tobar an Dualchais project run by Sabhal Mor Ostaig.

Christina Campbell from Northton is currently reviewing the content of the School of Scottish Studies archive and the Comunn Eachdraidh’s transcribed archive. A proportion of the funding has been secured from the Heritage Lottery Fund to create a two year post for a Project Officer to transcribe chosen passages from existing audio archives yet to be transcribed and to work with volunteers in the community to gather additional audio material on chosen topics. Match funding is being sought for this post from LEADER.

*Funding sources - the Heritage Lottery Fund, Bord na Gaidhlig, Comhairle nan Eilean Siar, Highlands and Islands Enterprise and the Gaelic Language Promotion Trust.
